Eating Disorders

Body image is the mental representation that one creates in their mind, but it may or may not relate to how others see an individual. The skewed view that someone has of their body is a culprit affecting people across the globe, where ethnicity, culture, gender, and age may all fall prey to it. According to ANAD (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders), about 30 million Americans suffer from some sort of eating disorder. Eating disorders hold a record for having the highest mortality rate when compared to other mental illnesses; someone dies of an eating disorder every 62 minutes.

Types of Eating Disorders

There are copious numbers of eating disorders and, unfortunately, the statistics mentioned above don’t begin to scratch the surface. Here are few examples of eating disorders:

  • Anorexia Nervosa: People reduce the amount of energy intake required for their weight, age, gender, development and physical health.
  • Bulimia Nervosa: Individuals consume large amounts of food, and then induce themselves to vomit to stop weight gain.
  • Binge Eating Disorder (BED): Eating large amounts of food in small periods of time.
  • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) 14: Children are not just finicky when it comes to this disorder, but they become malnourished because they restrict themselves from eating certain foods.
  • Diabulimia: People with Type 1 diabetes purposely underuse insulin to control their weight.

Treatment Methods

Like other mental disorders and illnesses, care should involve a diverse team of experts. It’s recommended that professional caretakers include the following:

  • Psychologist
  • Psychiatrist
  • Social worker
  • Nutritionist
  • Primary care physician

Due to the severe toll that eating disorders may have on an individual’s physical health, psychological therapy is not enough. It’s also important, if possible, to incorporate family therapy and support groups. Family-Based Treatment, according to NEDA, is a method used for patients who are minors.

In severe cases, inpatient care may be necessary; the person suffering from the eating disorder will be hospitalized or placed in residential care.

If you or someone you care about is suffering from an eating disorder, call the helpline now at 1-800-931-2237. An eating disorder is a serious medical and health concern that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

What Our Clients Say

  • The past 2 years working with you has been amazing. I have grown to be a much better person emotionally, maturely, and spiritually than I ever imagined I could or would. I never thought that I could say that I like the person I am and dare I say I do. I still have struggles but with your help I know that I can overcome them and I thank you so much for that. I have worked with many counselors since I was a teenager. I have had many counselors who I did not have a connection with, I am very happy to say this is not the case with you. I still have things to work through as you know but I feel like I can get through these issues knowing your here. Thank you for all you do.

  • Without going into details about my journey let me tell you that I was broken but functional wearing different masks for different people, places and things. Knowing well that something was wrong until at work one day the build up went into overload and I remember calling my doctor and he told me to go to the hospital. I was homicidal. Everything was closing in on me. I have a great therapist and she has given me tools to work through tough times and talking freely without judgement but justice. That's my story and I'm sticking to it going on three years in October I've been in therapy and I know where I would be if I didn't it's a process and I'm still under construction but healing

  • "I love your services. You have made such an impact in my life. These are my top reasons why I love you as a therapist:
My top 3 for you are.
    3. You Care- not so much about me personally but about my mental health
    2. You listen- or sessions are perfect cause it's proper communication you listen and allow me to get my thought and feelings out without judgement or advice and that allows me to make better rational decisions
    1. Your Very Persistent- I'm a very stubborn person and I don't like repeating conversations but you allow me to revisit moments that I need to revisit in order to heal properly.
I was in therapy for about 2-3 years prior to seeing you with someone and I wasn't really noticing change but when you became my therapist I felt the healing start immediately just by how comfortable you made me. Over the past year seeing you Ms. Hill I've grown a lot and half the reason why is cause of you."

  • "I began my journey at Baltimore National In November 2014. When I came to get the clinic I didn’t know my beginning from my end. I was in a bad place. I drank like a fish in a waterless tank.
I had behavior, relationship, financial and other situations going on. I was a mess! Through the years activities, sessions and classes helped me relate to the world I once didn’t see.
During my years I had a deep problem which was inside my mind. The therapist and doctor help me to understand just that it was inside my mind.
Often we try to depend on ourselves for self help. That doesn’t work, everybody needs somebody all the time. My therapist,Ms Yannika advocated for me one of my biggest ever situations in my life. Without her there’s no way in sand castle beach America could I be rest assurance. I thank Baltimore National Pike for helping me almost get to where I belong!
    Loving me is BEAUTIFUL!

  • Mr. Sumpter services have been the most effective out of all the therapists I have had in the past. He gets down to the root of things and not just sits and listens to me speak. He digs deeper with me and I love his approach and how he gets me prepared for each therapy session. My sessions have been very much so impactful. When I was first assigned to Mr Sumpter,my life was a mess. I was homeless and jobless and now he has been really helpful getting me stabled in her life again. He has been helping me to budget her money, he encourages me to have a social life, he encourages me to finish school and he is the only therapist that seems to care about me and root for me to get well and be successful as he knows I will be. He has helped me reach my goals and is always in my corner and prepares me for everything and walks me through, step by step through all the hard times I had. I would recommend a therapist like Sumpter to everyone I know as it is hard to find a therapist who cares about me getting better mentally and loves what he does. I can see the passion he has as a therapist. I wouldn't want any other therapist if it is not Mr Sumpter. He has really turned my life around and made me realize the good in things and that I can get through any obstacles life throws my way.

  • Things did not go easy at first as far as getting prp. After receiving services, I have gotten better with budgeting my money and learned how to keep an apartment. When I got evicted at my first apartment I felt alone and was homeless and my mother did not want me at home. My counselor Virgil helped me to fix the relationship with my mother. PRP has helped me to obtain employment, a plan that worked to help me pay off debts and eventually get another apartment.

  • Since receiving PRP services, I obtained my first REAL job with benefits. Because of PRP I have been able to advocate for myself and maintain custody of my children. I have also learned to believe in myself and how to cope with my circumstances. I learned and acknowledge that I have and always will be a strong black father. PRP supports me in my dreams and aspirations. Today I do not feel hopeless. I have hope. I am grateful for Mr. Virgil’s help in this process.

  • I have learned to be more open minded especially when it comes. I still get angry, but I do not act impulsive about it. PRP has helped me in my relationships with my family and in people in and of school. I used to get in trouble in school, but I have not had a phone call. I still do not like people, but I will tolerate them when I am with peers that my counselor has introduced or has been present with. I have trust in my PRP counselor, Mr. Virgil. I have a better attitude and outlook of people. I enjoy the recreational activities. I look forward to my PRP time, especially when we have fun.
